Response to Major opening when bid is from 3rd or 4th position
This convention is used by BBO ROBOTS
When 1st seat and 2nd seat pass or 1st-2nd-3rd seat pass and your partner now opens a MAJOR at Level 1 :
- On balancing seats, opening bid can be with lower points (less than 12+ HCP but more than 8+ HCP) to avoid passing out the round.
- Also, many times, your partner is at seat 3 and first two have passed. Here, the chance of the opponent at seat 4 having a good hand are high, so your partner bids a Major at a lower HCP to block low bids by seat 4 opponent.
On balancing seat opening, responder with a 3+ card FIT and 10-12 HCP, will have to use a convention called REVERSE DRURY in uncontested auction (i.e. only when seat 4 opponent passes).
Follow this line of action :
- 6-9 HCP and 3+ card support-Bid 2 of the Major.level. This bid is natural.
- 10-12 HCP and FIT-Bid 2!c REVERSE DRURY. It is one round forcing Alert.

Line of action by opener can be any of the following :
- Bid 2!D relay to show normal opening regular 12+ HCP hand.
- Bid the opening Major 1 level up to show sign off as the bid was made at lower level. No interest in game. This helps in keeping the bid low.
Expert BBO robot bids also use the take following action:
- New suit without jumping 4+ cards in the suit, less than 18 total points.
- New suit single jump 18+ total points, singleton in suit bid.
- New suit double jump 18+ total points, void in suit bid.
- 2NT 5332 shape, one-round force, less than 18 total points.
- 3NT 6322 shape, one-round force, less than 18 total points.
- 3M 18+ total points, balanced.
- 4M To play, nothing extra to show.
Note Reverse Drury cannot be used, when opponent interferes at seat 4.
Reverse Drury blocks 2!C bid for natural club move. Use 3!c under such situations.
